Elizabeth Moehringer, age 95, formerly of Garfield, NJ, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 18, 2024, at her home in Myrtle Beach, SC.
She was born in Stroćin, Czechoslovakia on May 10, 1928, a daughter of the late Michal & Paraska Vatralovou Kaćmar.
Elizabeth, at age 11, and her family experienced first-hand the horrors of World War II as the German and Russian front moved through their village and split their family up that first winter. The family re-united and after the war, at age 19, Elizabeth met and married John Pisanchik, who had served in the U.S. Navy during the War. It was then she came to the United States on The Queen Elizabeth. She believed coming to America was one of the greatest blessings in her life.
Family and faith were two great pillars in Elizabeth’s life. She loved raising her family and was a loving mother. She found much joy in watching her grands and great-grands grow up around her. After her husband John passed away in 1988, she moved to Myrtle Beach in 1995. She met Thomas Moehringer and they married in July of 1997.
Elizabeth was a devout Christian and was very active in St. Michael’s Byzantine Cathedral in Passaic, New Jersey where she was a member of the choir. After moving to South Carolina, she joined St. Michael Catholic Church in Garden City and sang in their choir. In 2002 she was one of the founding members of Blessed Basil Byzantine Chapel in Conway and served as their cantor for ten years.
She was preceded in death by her first husband John, her second husband Thomas, grandson Nicholas Pisanchik, and two brothers and three sisters in Slovakia.
Elizabeth is survived by a son, John Pisanchik and his wife Kathy of Gilbert, SC and Thom Moehringer of Long Island, NY; two daughters, Elizabeth Friedman of New York City, and Beverly Hannigan and her husband Steven of Myrtle Beach; seven grandchildren, JJ (Christy), Michael (Stephanie), Cassidy, Jack (Paige), Kirstin (Armando), Tricia, and Erin.
